How to count a night shift and its breaks
A shift from 20:00 to 08:00 ends the following morning. With a 30-minute unpaid break, its usual paid duration is 11 hours and 30 minutes.
Keep the start date consistent
Enter the day you arrive at work and select the next day for the end. ShiftPlum shows the event on its start date and marks the overnight end, so you do not count the same shift twice.
Separate paid time from elapsed time
For a 12-hour shift with 30 unpaid minutes, the calculation is 720 minus 30, or 690 minutes. Paid breaks should not be entered as unpaid breaks. Use the arrangement that applies to your work.
Check clock changes
In a time zone that changes its clocks, a night shift may be an hour shorter or longer. ShiftPlum uses the calendar time zone and elapsed time. A clock time that does not exist during a spring change must be corrected.
Compare the estimate with your payslip
Rates, daily overtime multipliers and deductions are manual settings. Employers may use different rules, including weekly overtime. The report helps compare personal records; it is not payroll or tax advice.
